The above photos shows David’s detailed fused glass technique before and after firing.

David Alcala was born and raised in Northern California, where he spent most of his childhood drawing, creating or building one thing or another. David studied at UC Davis and UC Berkeley where he majored in fine arts. It was at Berkeley where he first started to develop his Sand Tapestry Technique. There was an immediate positive response to this new art form and he started demonstrating and selling his Sand Tapestries throughout the West coast.

Over the past 30 years, David’s innovative sand art technique has been featured on HGTV, well other news media around the country not to mention his popular Youtube videos that have reached a quarter million hits. To date David has sold over 50,000 of his unique sand works of art. He currently lives in  Monterey CA, where he and his wife Claudia own and operate their glass art studio / gallery, fittingly named, Sand to Glass.

It was ten years ago when David first started working with fused glass and soon discovered that many of his sand art techniques could apply to glass fusion as well. Since introducing this Glass Tapestry technique and his new fusing medium Flexi-Glass he has opened new doors to fusing. Many consider his work pioneering and revolutionary in the world of glass art. His work and articles have recently been featured in publications such Stained Glass Quarterly, Glass Art Magazine, Stained Glass News and America’s Best Glass Artists.

Since the publication of his new book and Ebook SAND TO GLASS “Igniting New Directions Fusion In Glass” David’s classes and educational workshops are now in high demand throughout the country where he is able to share his inspiring and innovative glass techniques with others in the family of glass artists.

David says, “The most gratifying part of this whole journey is that I now find myself a part of a community of creative glass artists that prides its self sharing and the love of glass.”
