    Imagine the discovery when man first found out he could take grains of sands to fire and make glass. From sand to glass, what could be a more natural medium.

     While a fine arts major at UC Berkeley, David Alcala first originated the art he calls Sand Tapestry, basically a combination of sculpting and weaving layers of colored sand between two panes of glass to create beautifully intricate scenes.  SInce 1976 David has created over 50,000 works of art with sand that have reached every corner of the world.

     “Another discovery moment came when I became aware of the material called glass frit, and that I could create basically the same scenes then fire them to a solid plate. I was even more astonished that no one else was fusing with this technique.”

David’s fusing techniques has grabbed the attention and created quite a stir in the glass art community. Here’s what Gil Reynolds (the Guru of glass fusing) had to say about David’s new approach to glass fusion. ”It’s a major innovation that gives you access to an entirely new look...that is very cool, most people working with fused glass work from a horizontal flat base.  By shifting to a vertical approach, you now have access to a different aesthetic look”.

David and his wife Claudia own and operate their gallery called what else, Sand to Glass, located in beautiful Monterey California, right in the heart of historic Cannery Row. By popular demand, the late Glass Instructor and Author David Alcala is back to take you on another creative glass fusing adventure. In his first book, "Sand To Glass - Igniting New Directions In Glass Fusion", David introduced you to new directions in the fusing of glass, along with the basic introduction to his Flexi-Glass Medium applications.
